R.P. Adams has an experienced engineering team and offers both standard and custom self-cleaning strainers. Custom features that are available include special flange sizes, metric flanges, special internal linings including rubber lining, special exterior coatings, different materials of construction for the vessel and / or internals such as various stainless steels (304L, 316L, duplex, & super duplex SS), higher design pressures, and custom support legs and nozzle configurations to accommodate customer piping arrangements. Automatic strainers can be skid-mounted and supplied complete with piping, valves, instrumentation, controls, and wiring.
Strainer vessels are available with design and construction per R.P. Adams standard design, or per ASME Code Section VIII with U stamp or ASME Section III with N stamp. Vessel design and certification per international requirements such as CRN, Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), or other international codes are also available.
Automatic Backwash Controls
R.P. Adams automatic backwash strainers are designed for intermittent backwash and un-attended operation. Most R.P. Adams automatic strainers are supplied with a small, stand alone control panel that contains all of the control logic. Our standard control package includes a differential pressure switch mounted on the strainer, and a panel with adjustable timer-relay control logic. When the differential pressure exceeds the DP switch set point, a timed backwash cycle is initiated. The standard panel includes a selector switch for plant operator control and a pilot light.
Standard panels use a NEMA-4 watertight enclosure. Control panels are also available with corrosion resistant NEMA-4X, or hazardous area NEMA-7/9 or ATEX enclosures. The local control panel normally includes motor starter and overloads. Control panels are available for all standard motor voltages:  60 hz / 1ph or 3ph / 115V, 230V, 460V, 575V; or 50 hz / 1ph or 3ph / 110V, 220V, 400V.
Standard control panels are also available with a programmable operator control station (PLC). PLC based control panels are furnished with a touch screen or keypad operator interface that allows easy operator access to control settings. PLC controls can be supplied with pressure transmitters or DP transmitter to measure pressure drop instead of a DP switch. PLC controls are commonly used for certain strainer applications and systems, such as backwash recovery systems (see Engineered Packages).
In addition to standard control panels, R.P. Adams has experience meeting a wide variety of customers individual control requirements. Custom control panels can be configured to meet many additional requirements, such as disconnect, additional indicator lights, alarms (e.g. - high DP, motor overload, shear key failure), backwash valve status monitoring, backwash cycle counter, panel heater, and contacts for plant control system remote monitoring / interface. These features are available in both timer relay logic control and PLC based control panels. And even more features are available in our PLC based control panels, such as remote access and operation via Ethernet.
